Ella Tulin (1931-2006)

Ella Tulin studied art and sculpture at the American University, London Polytechnic, and the Corcoran School of Art, claiming she “started out with painting, but wandered into the sculpture studio and never came out.” She also studied art therapy at George Washington University. Her work is in collections in seven different countries and 14 states within the U.S. She has been included in numerous international exhibitions in London, Paris and Moscow, as well as nationally in Maryland, New York, Ohio, Florida, Connecticut, Maine and Massachusetts. Her bust of Alfred Eisenstaedt can be seen in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, and the head of Robert St. John at Ben Gurion University, Israel. In June of 2000 her piece “Fully Empowered” was featured as a centerpiece, program cover and award design for the International Art Exhibition’s Progress of the World’s Women, held at the United Nations in New York. She has also had her work featured in publications as diverse as The Washington Post, Sculpture Review, Washington Magazine, New Art Examiner, Boston Design and Czechoslovakian Playboy. Ella was a long time political activist and a founding member of Women’s Strike for Peace. In support of peace and individual freedom she made visits to Cuba, Russia, Chile and Czechoslovakia. She lived in Bethesda, Maryland and was a summer resident of West Tisbury, Martha’s Vineyard.
