MVY by David Wallis
David Wallis

Born in Westchester, NY, David Wallis grew up spending his summers on Martha’s Vineyard visiting his grandfather, a year-round West Chop resident. David attended Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts and in 1989 received his BFA in Commercial Illustration. His first professional art show was at the Granary Gallery on Martha’s Vineyard that same year.

In 1993, shortly after moving to the Island full-time, David received a commission from Farm Neck Golf Course, which led to 15 original paintings that could be seen in limited edition prints, posters, scorecards, a membership book and an installation at the course.

David has led classes at Featherstone Center for the Arts, the Nathan Mayhew Institute and several college level courses in the region. After a number of successful shows at the Granary Gallery, David joined the staff in 1998. Through working at the Granary, David has received many special commissions and been part of career-highlighting shows. He has also been inspired by watching the paths of other artists and gained influence through their self-expression.

When not at the gallery, David is at work in the studio he shares with fellow Granary painter Ken Vincent, in a space that was once the West Tisbury police station. David’s original

works have been seen in publications such as Martha’s Vineyard Magazine, The Complete Guide to Golf On Cape Cod, and Vineyard Style. He has had exhibitions in Boston, Nantucket and throughout New England.
