In 1978 I moved to Boston to attend a two-year program at the New England School of Photography. After the first year, I felt the program was going too slowly and dropped out to work full-time as an assistant and a photographer at a commercial photography studio. We did inspiring work for national clients in the heyday of the advertising world.
Twenty-six years ago I moved my young family to West Tisbury so my children could grow up in a small ocean community. I commuted to Boston for about 14 years to continue in my career at John Holt Studios doing high-end commercial photography and digital imaging for national and regional clients. Our business eventually evolved to be called Dock25.
After more than 30 years in Boston, I opened my own business on the Vineyard, Wayne Smith Photography. My friend Mark Lovewell has referred to me as the best well-kept secret on the island, which is not necessarily a good marketing plan. I have photographed weddings, portraits, editorial, architecture, commercial assignments, and fine art. I also teach workshops with my dear friend Alison Shaw and do private teaching for people who would like to take their photography to the next level. I live in my beloved town of West Tisbury.
