Great Horned Owl #1 by Jeffrey Rouse

Creating art has been a lifelong pursuit but believing I am an artist has been more of a challenge.  I am not a conventionally trained artist but have augmented my professional education as a specialized dentist or a maxillofacial prosthodontist with individualized courses in ceramics ( University of Indianapolis), bronze sculpture (Herron School of Art, Indianapolis) and oil painting ( New York Academy of Art).

My professional career depended on my natural artistic talent to create artificial eyes, ears and noses for head and neck cancer patients.  This specialty required I understand sculpting techniques, and color matching skills to create silicone prostheses to match a wide range of facial defects for cancer and accident survivors. My artistic interests have resulted in work that is both narrative and realistic with many bronze sculptural commissions in the Midwest. Recently, I have relied on a skill set developed in orthodontic courses requiring accurate wire bending techniques to create a functional oral appliance.

My wire sculptures are to be suspended with a reflective background to best capture the unique shadows cast by the detailed feathers.  The effect is to add a magical quality to sculpture that is suspended.   I chose the owl not just because its symbolism of wisdom, but also for their ability to see through the dark of night and focus on the issue at hand. We can all derive some morsel of guidance from the animal kingdom and the owl is rich in its symbolism and parallels which can guide us to a better flight path in life.
