Having a strong sense of the interconnectedness of our world, I see a lot of human emotions/characteristics in all of nature. I primarily rely on photographic references to paint in studio, however it is ultimately a deep-seated emotional response to an image that is absolutely necessary to create a successful painting. Though my work is photo-realistic in nature, at some point the painting takes on its own personality, apart from the original reference. It is then that I decide what to omit or emphasize which leads the painting to its own narrative. I have an intangible, emotional connection to all of my work, and it is my hope that that is what is felt, albeit unknowingly, by the viewer. Without that connection the painting is merely a representation of common objects. I believe it is essential to “feel” when a painting is beautiful rather than to merely “see” that it is.
