Ahi by Scott Terry
Scott Terry

Scott Terry is a painter and commercial fisherman living on Martha’s Vineyard. From an early age, Scott knew that his life would be devoted to art. After a year of study at Drew University with the practical goal of medical illustration, he traveled the world for several years, returning with the renewed conviction that pursuing art would be his life’s direction.

Scott attended the Swain School of Design in New Bedford and has been painting full time (with summers off for fishing) ever since. The time he spends on the water is significant, as he is able to soak up the colors of the early morning and evening landscapes. He carries the memory of these vistas with him into the offseason, during which he is able to paint seven days a week.

Scott showed his first paintings at the Field Gallery in the 1980s and has been at the Granary since 1989. He has been represented at galleries from New York to California, but now devotes his time fully to his Vineyard clientele.

“Painting is, and should be, an ongoing struggle,” Scott says. “There is no room for complacency or self-satisfaction. At times it can be torture and occasionally it can be uplifting. For me there is no other choice.”
