Fertile Crescent by Anne Huibregtse
Anne Huibregtse
Anne Huibregtse of Wingdale, New York, has been sculpting cows for more than 15 years. After graduating from Mount Holyoke College in 1980, Anne headed to the Islands – first visiting the Vineyard, and then helping Northampton artist Harriet Brickman build a large cement sculpture on the beach at Fisher’s Island, NY. She also spent a year on the British Isles, working with sculptor John Doubleday, studying and traveling in London. Settling back into mainland life, Anne began foundry work and switched from primarily painting to sculpture. While becoming adept at all phases of foundry work, she began exhibiting her sculpture in both juried shows and both group and solo exhibitions. She started showing regularly in New York, Connecticut, Martha’s Vineyard and elsewhere in the eastern US, winning many awards for her work. In 1999, Anne left the foundry to devote herself full-time to her own sculpture. She continues to do all phases of production on her pieces -- making molds, wax chasing and gating, welding, metal chasing and patina -- herself. Cows continue to inspire her. She has become a fixture sketching cows at the local Duchess County Fair, whose farmers continue to exhibit top quality dairy and beef cattle each year. She bikes past herds, and translates her love for the animal into work which transcends cow forms and personalities to tap into their rich and ancient symbolic tradition. Gary Golio, who curated a show of Anne’s in Chappaqua, NY, said of her sculptures: “They’re conceptual. She uses them as icons and emblems of American ideas, and the sculptures represent her sense of humor -- droll, amusing, very lyrical and tongue-in-cheek.” Anne’s work has appeared on the cover of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association as well as regularly in the New York Times. Featured articles about Anne have been published in the regional arts and culture magazine in The Pawling News Chronicle and the Harlem Valley Times as well as Westchester County’s The Record Review and North County News. She has been awarded the Audubon Artists’ Gold Medal of Honor, the Knickerbocker Artists’ Silver Medal and Best Sculpture at Silvermine Guild’s annual Art of the Northeast exhibition. Her bronze sculpture Segue was included in the National Academy’s 179th Invitational, Exhibition of Contemporary American Art, winning the Ellin P. Speyer Prize for Sculpture. In May 2004, Anne received the prestigious Alex J. Ettl Grant from the National Sculpture Society, “for notable achievement in American Sculpture through a distinguished body of work” and in 2005 Anne was notified of her election as professional member in the National Sculpture Society. Her work is also an appreciated part of private collections in the US and abroad.
