The Double Line From Chilmark Winding by Craig Dripps
Craig Dripps
For more than five decades Craig Dripps has had, in his own mind at least, an intimate relationship with Martha’s Vineyard. Indeed, in choosing a career in teaching, he made a very deliberate decision that allowed him the pleasure of spending every summer on the island. His love of the island and his interest in photography came together in 1960 with his first Vineyard photograph – that of E. B. Keith’s Pond in Chilmark. In landscapes and seascapes, in all their moods, he has developed a strong sensitivity to the beauty and vulnerability of the many enclaves tucked away throughout the island. Craig has exhibited his work on the island for many years at several galleries, including the Granary Gallery. He has shown his work, as well, in galleries in Philadelphia and Boston. The culmination of three years of collaboration with Rose Styron became By Vineyard Light, a book, now in its third printing, of island photography and poetry published by Rizzoli in 1995. Recent work includes the Vineyard Screen Saver, which can be found on thousands of computers across Martha’s Vineyard and across the country, and the mariners’ foremost guide to the tying of nautical knots, Nautical Knots and Lines Illustrated. His photography has adorned the covers of the popular Vineyard cookbook Summer Magic, the Guide to Martha’s Vineyard, and the Vineyard Explorer. His photography has been featured in Experience Martha’s Vineyard, Vineyard Style, Cape Cod Life, New England Travel, and Yankee magazines. In 1998, Polo Ralph Lauren chose one of the images from By Vineyard Light to be the photographic logo for the company’s Hampton Beach men’s clothing line. After twenty-three years, he left his position as chairman of the math department at the Haverford School near Philadelphia and moved a decade ago with this wife, Betsy, and his youngest child, Perry, to West Tisbury. Currently, he teaches at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. He is actively involved with the M.V. Historical Society where he is secretary to the board and head of the Lighthouse Restoration Committee.
