Cut Apple by Ellen McCluskey
     Ellen McCluskey is well known on the Vineyard for her many creative endeavors since she made the island her permanent home thirty-eight years ago.  She helped establish various shops and a prominent gallery in Edgartown in her early years after leaving the Island for a short time to attend Longy School of Music in Cambridge, she returned to teach music.  Then in 1981 she worked as the artist coordinator at the Granary Gallery, which is where she started showing her work 18 years ago.      Ellen is a self-taught late bloomer who comes from a family on her grandmother's side of Dutch artists.  She was always drawing and painting from the time she was a young girl using charcoal, oils and pastels, primarily for still, interiors and portraiture.  It wasn't until she had lived on the Vineyard for a few years that she began to use pastels for the painting the landscape discovering that the various techniques of the medium are well suited for painting the landscape, the muted colors, the interplay of light and form and her emotional reaction to what she sees around her.  He finds rare beauty in those "special Vineyard places", many familiar to all and some only to a few.      "The Vineyard has character", Mrs. McCluskey says, "character that stems from endless diversity.  The colors I find in the fields, the trees, and the marshes are beautiful and the quality of the light affected by the surrounding water is the most important factor in my work."      In more recent years Mrs. McCluskey has been teaching the art of pastel painting to enthusiastic classes, some of whom are professional artists themselves, at Featherstone Center for the Arts here on the Vineyard.      Ellen's pastels are in the collections of many Vineyarders as well as in collections throughout the country and in Europe.  The Granary Gallery is pleased to exclusively represent her work.
